The peptide category has existed in cosmetic formulation for decades. Argireline launched in the early 2000s. Matrixyl followed. And yet, in 2024 and 2025, peptides have surged back to the top of NPD briefs — commanding premium price points, driving ingredient-led marketing and generating genuine consumer interest. So what changed?
The short answer is clinical evidence. The longer answer is a combination of better delivery technology, improved consumer sophistication and a market that has grown tired of promises without proof.
What peptides Actually Do
Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins like collagen and elastin. In skin biology, they act as signalling molecules: they tell cells what to do. A collagen fragment, for example, signals to fibroblasts that collagen has broken down and that more should be produced. A synthetically engineered peptide can mimic or amplify those signals with precision.

The Three Categories Worth Knowing
Not all peptides are the same, and understanding the categories matters when evaluating claims and building formulations.
Signal peptides stimulate or inhibit biological processes in the skin — collagen synthesis, elastin production, cell communication. Palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 (the Matrixyl 3000 combination) are the canonical example, with an extensive body of clinical literature behind them.
Carrier peptides transport trace elements — particularly copper and manganese — to enzymes that need them for collagen cross-linking and wound repair. GHK-Cu (copper tripeptide-1) is the most studied, with data going back to the 1970s.
